Antioxidants - Alphabetical by Food Group

What are Antioxidants?

In simplest terms that us lay people may understand, let's refer to a grammar school classroom experiment we are all familiar with in our everyday lives. If you cut an apple in half and expose it to the air, it will turn brown. But if you coat the cut side with lemon juice, it does not! At least not for a while. The apple turning brown is representative of free radicals and damage to our cells when they come in contact with oxygen in our bodies. The lemon is an anti-oxidant that protects our cells from that browning damage. In our bodies, this long term, constant browning damage is what leads to sickness and disease.
This list of antioxidants is data from the USDA Study named  Lipophilic and Hydrophilic Antioxidant Capacities of Common Foods in the United States.

This list of antioxidants was obtained from an USDA Study named  Lipophilic and Hydrophilic Antioxidant Capacities of Common Foods in the United States.
The antioxidant capacities was determined using the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity(ORAC) whose scientific implications... will be over the head of most of us!
But what we can understand is what these esteemed scientists state in this excerpt...
"Oxidative stress has been associated with the development of many chronic and degenerative diseases, including cancer, heart disease and neuronal degeneration such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases as well as being involved in the process of aging... Diets rich in fruits and vegetables have been considered as excellent sources of antioxidants. Vitamin C and E, polyphenols and carotenoids have been thought to be responsible for most of the antioxidant activity in foods. However, clinical trials using supplements of vitamin C, E, or carotenoids have provided inconsistent results. In terms of disease prevention, clinical trials with whole fruits and vegetables are more likely to give positive results....."

Well, there you have it! Antioxidants are good for you! Great for you! And even though this study was done in 2004, those of us at The RightTrak have not come across new findings as of yet. If you have heard of any updates on this matter, please share by leaving us a comment.
On the safe side, most medical professionals will agree that it is best to get your nutrients from the foods that you eat!

Enjoy the list and you might want to see this data listed...
